Editorial policy
How we prepare tools and texts about animal health: where the norms come from, how we label confidence and how often we update.
Where the norms come from
Vaccination intervals come from the WSAVA guidelines, worming from ESCCAP, life stages from AAHA and AAFP, energy needs from the Merck Veterinary Manual. A number we found no source for does not make it onto the site: there is no data for wood litter — so the calculator does not count it.
How sure we are
Every tool carries one of three marks:
- «Veterinary standard» — a rule from the guidelines of veterinary associations.
- «Vets disagree» — the sources differ; we show the common choice and say so.
- «Rough guide» — there is no veterinary source: the figures come from secondary sources, so adjust them to your own.
Who checks
The Akellos team chooses the norms and checks them against the sources. We are bringing in a veterinary consultant for each country we work in; once a vet has reviewed a page, their name and qualification will appear beside the date. Until then a page shows only the date it was updated — we do not invent reviewers.
How often we update
We review the norms when new guidelines come out, and at least once a year. The «Updated» date on a page changes together with its numbers.
Not a substitute for a vet
The tools give a guide. The vet chooses the product and the dose; at any sign of illness, see a vet.
